Compartments in the abdomen of Drosophila and the role of the engrailed locus.

چکیده

A clonal analysis has shown that the dorsal surface of the first abdominal segment of Drosophila melanogaster is subdivided into anterior and posterior compartments. Cells of the posterior compartment grow up to but not beyond the anterior-posterior compartment border within the first abdominal segment and the intersegmental border that defines the boundary between the first and second abdominal segments. Growing within these boundaries, a narrow band of tissue clonally isolated from the adjoining tissue is formed. When these posterior cells are deficient for the engruiled locus, however, neither the compartment nor the segment border is maintained. The implications, that compartmentalization is essential for segmentation, and that all insect segments are subdivided by anterior and posterior compartments, are discussed.

The engrailed locus of Drosophila: in situ localization of transcripts reveals compartment-specific expression.

The engrailed locus plays a unique and critical role in organizing the segmented body plan of Drosophila. Embryos lacking engrailed function die with fused, abnormal segments. Adult mosaics with patches of engrailed cells similarly suffer defects in all of their segments, but only with mutant cells that are in the posterior developmental compartment of each segment. The non-uniform requirement ...

Engrailed: a gene controlling compartment and segment formation in Drosophila.

A total of 58 mutations at the engrailed locus were isolated. Analysis suggests that this genetic locus is necessary for survival but required only in the cells of the posterior compartments. Inactivation of the engrailed locus renders the animal incapable of maintaining the separation between the groups of cells that constitute either the compartments that subdivide each segment or the individ...

hedgehog and engrailed: pattern formation and polarity in the Drosophila abdomen.

Like the Drosophila embryo, the abdomen of the adult consists of alternating anterior (A) and posterior (P) compartments. However the wing is made by only part of one A and part of one P compartment. The abdomen therefore offers an opportunity to compare two compartment borders (A/P is within the segment and P/A intervenes between two segments), and ask if they act differently in pattern format...

Creating a Drosophila wing de novo, the role of engrailed, and the compartment border hypothesis.

Anterior/posterior compartment borders bisect every Drosophila imaginal disc, and the engrailed gene is essential for their function. We analyzed the role of the engrailed and invected genes in wing discs by eliminating or increasing their activity. Removing engrailed/invected from posterior wing cells created two new compartments: an anterior compartment consisting of mutant cells and a poster...

Repression of ci-D in posterior compartments of Drosophila by engrailed.

A Drosophila strain was isolated that carries a lacZ-bearing recombinant P element integrated in the cubitus interruptus Dominant (ci-D) locus. This strain expresses beta-galactosidase in the anterior compartments of embryos and imaginal discs, suggesting that expression of ci-D is anterior-compartment specific. DNA from ci-D was cloned. In situ hybridization to imaginal discs confirmed that ci...
